Marc Márquez got back on to the top step of the MotoGP podium at the German GP after he held off in-form Red Bull KTM rider Miguel Oliveira for his 11th straight Sachsenring win.
Here is all you need to know:
– The six-time MotoGP world champion had struggled to get back on the pace after returning from his 2020 injury that kept him out of the season, however he looked back to his best around one of his favourite tracks.
– The Spaniard looked like the Repsol Honda rider of old as he created a crucial gap early on and held off a fast-charging Oliveira to make it eight circuit wins in the premier class, 11 overall and 57 in MotoGP.
– It was his first MotoGP victory since Valencia 2019 and it was an impressive ride as he duelled with compatriot Aleix Espargaró early on and emerged better after white flags came out on lap eight.
– As the race progressed, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo started to make his way through the field to challenge the likes of Australian Jack Miller and Frenchman Johann Zarco – who started on pole position.
– Márquez did just enough to fend off Portuguese Oliveira to win by 1.61 seconds with Quartararo third to increase his championship lead as the Ducatis of Miller and Zarco were only sixth and eighth.
– The 28-year-old said: „It is a difficult situation in my career. Today helps a lot and is like extra fuel. This victory will be extra motivation for me, for Honda and for all the team. This is the first time that I have ridden with less physical limitation. I want to say thanks to all the people.“
– South African Binder claimed his best finish of 2021 with fourth for Red Bull KTM as Repsol Honda’s Pol Espargaró ended 10th, Spain’s Jorge Martin 12th, Japan’s Takaaki Nakagami 13th and Iker Lecuona 17th with Italian Danilo Petrucci and Spaniard Álex Márquez crashing out on lap four.
