Lasse Sørensen and TK9 E-SPEED victorious in World eX opener

Landschlacht, March 11, 2021 – #RacingForTheClimate got underway in spectacular style with the highly anticipated season opener of the new RCCO World eX Championship. With
teams from eight different nations and drivers from twelve countries, the grid lined up for the British eX Prix at Silverstone. After six exciting levels, it all came down to a showdown of the TK9 E-SPEED team versus a wild card entry with Lasse Sørensen beating Jernej Simoncic to become the first eX Prix winner.

World eX, combining the excitement of motorsport and a strong message of sustainability by raising awareness about the climate crisis, features six levels per events with short action-packed races taking the drivers and teams all the way from the qualifying heats through to the Semi Finals, Quarter Finals, Final and then ultimately the winner-takes-all
Super Final.

Level 1 rang in the first session of head-to-head duels for the twenty-two drivers, with big names from the world of real-life motorsport such as António Félix da Costa, Bruno Senna,
Romain Grosjean and more. The eleven one-lap race winners all progressed to Level 3, joined by Michi Hoyer, who was the eventual winner of Level 2, the Last Chance race for the eleven drivers who all lost out in Level 1.

The race wins in Level 3 went to Jernej Simoncic and Alen Terzic, who proceeded to the next level together with the top four finishers. Two races with four cars each in Level 4 ensued for three laps of competition concluding in the top three moving up to Level 5. Terzic took another heat win amongst the esports racers, while Lasse Sørensen was on top in the pro-racing drivers’ battle.

Level 5 brought the two grids together in the Final for four laps of racing with six cars on track to determine the two drivers who would fight it out for the overall victory in Level 6. The grid lined up with Alen Terzic on pole, ahead of Martin Stefanko, Liam de Waal, Lasse
Sørensen, Jernej Simoncic and Dries Vanthoor. The pack of six drivers jostled for position around the legendary Grand Prix circuit with a high-speed train of 1000-hp eX ZERO
prototypes. Sørensen took the lead on the second lap, when he and Simoncic passed Alen Terzic for the all-important top two positions. Sørensen and Simoncic led from there on and
finished in that order.

The Super Final, Level 6, saw Jernej Simoncic and Lasse Sørensen facing off to become the first-ever World eX winner. Sørensen decisively took the lead in the hotly contested first
corner and was closely pursued by Simoncic all the way to the finish. Despite Simoncic remaining within striking distance, Sørensen was not headed and crossed the line to win the
British eX Prix, taking team founder Mr Le Mans Tom Kristensen’s lucky number 7 to another international race win. “It was a good race and I am happy to take the victory in the Super Final. Looking forward to getting more experience with the eX ZERO,” said the young professional Danish racing driver. “The car is a lot of fun, it is very technical and not easy to drive.” With his triumph, Sørensen has qualified for the special shootout on November 25 to
crown the first overall World eX champion on the famous Nordschleife.
The successful World eX season opener is the culmination of months of work and the vision of series founders Mike Rockenfeller, Le Mans winner and DTM champion, together with communication expert Thomas Voigt.

Lasse Sorensen

“Firstly, congratulations to Lasse Sørensen for becoming our first eX Prix winner. He proved that the real-world drivers can hold their own against the esports professionals. It was great
seeing the full grid of eX ZERO prototypes on track racing for the first time after so much preparation,” says World eX co-founder Mike Rockenfeller. “The season opener just wets my appetite to see the teams and drivers getting even more familiar with World eX and #RacingForTheClimate going from strength to strength.”

“After months of hard work and many long days behind the scenes, World eX has kicked off with an exciting first round and a worthy winner. We are really looking forward to the rest of
the season. A big thank you goes out to our partners and the entire team of people around the world who have worked together to turn World eX into a reality,” says RCCO E-Sport CEO Thomas Voigt. “Most of them had very long days and shorts nights recently.”

The next installment of World eX will travel across the virtual Atlantic Ocean to Sebring in Florida for the eX Prix of the United States on April 1, broadcast from 20:00 CET.
