Robin Frijns joins the grid as World eX heads to Maastricht

Landschlacht, May 24, 2021 – The fourth round of the new RCCO World eX Championship sees #RacingForTheClimate racing on the virtual streets of Maastricht, broadcast on Thursday, May 27. Robin Frijns, the current Formula E leader, makes his debut at home as a wild card entry in the ex Prix of the Netherlands. Dutch lady racer Beitske Visser returns to the grid.

Straight from the real-world of sustainable motorsport, Envision Virgin Racing driver Robin Frijns will take part in the eX Prix of the Netherlands. Frijns is the current leader of the Formula E drivers’ standings after finishing runner-up in the recent Monaco E-Prix. He will be stepping out of his real-world Audi e-tron FE07 Formula E racing car and into the esports machine used by World eX: the virtual eX ZERO prototype with 1,000 hp.

After three eX Prix events so far at Silverstone, Sebring and Sepang, Lasse Sørensen from TK9 E-SPEED has won twice and Phillippe Denes from BS+COMPETITION became the most recent winner in Malaysia. Sørensen will be back on the grid and aiming to bounce back from the error that cost him a place in the finals last time out. Phillippe Denes will not be racing in the Netherlands. The young American racer stood in for Beitske Visser at Sepang.

Visser is another local hero alongside Frijns as one of the pro drivers in the field. The young Dutch lady racer is an official BMW works driver and is renowned for being ultra-quick on the race track in both the real and virtual worlds. Liam de Waal rounds out the Dutch representation on the grid with the esports racer competing for Patrick Long Esports.

Maastricht was the first venue to be confirmed for the inaugural season of World eX. The circuit, developed by Andy Maassen and simformula.eu, has a high-speed layout that will challenge the drivers. “One word: Fast. The races will be very fast and slipstreaming will be very important,“ says Mike Rockenfeller, the Le Mans winner and former DTM champion who is also a founder of World eX. “We have been looking forward to this one ever since we confirmed it months ago. The track is not an easy one, I needed a few attempts before I got it right. We are in for some great racing in the Netherlands.”

Will Lasse Sørensen be triumphed once more, or will World eX get its third new winner? Find out in the latest episode of #RacingForTheClimate with Nicki Shields and Dave Richardson on Thursday evening (May 27) from 20:00 CEST on motorsport.tv and www.twitch.tv/rccoworldex.
